Winnie the Pooh Day

pooh_shepardI have an incredible love and affection for Winnie the Pooh, in all forms – from the books to the movies and the TV show, to appearances in videos games or the various stuffed animal variety. 18 January has become known as Winnie the Pooh Day, as it falls on creator A. A. Milne’s birthday. Having been around for 90 years Winnie the Pooh has cemented himself in popular culture and in people’s lives and memories, both childhood and beyond. In doing so, Pooh has become famous for certain phrases and sayings, A. A. Milne often being credited as creating quotes that are often inspirational or motivating, things to cheer you up or about friendship and love. And while beautiful, poetic and inspiring these are, many of them are not actually from the original works.

There are so many quotes misattributed to Milne, sometimes these are from the Disney films, or misquotes from the books, but sometimes they are completely different altogether. But as JGunn points out, it is easier to attribute these quotes to Pooh or Milne because “Disney Inc” doesn’t sound that profound. Still, even just Winnie the Pooh and the movie reference is better than continually giving Milne incorrect credit in my opinion.

There is a wonderful website, Pooh Misquoted, that helps locate the original references of many misquotes. It’s here I learnt that the phrase, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard”, the one from last year I was convinced wasn’t from Milne but couldn’t find a reference anywhere, was actually from a 1975 film called The Other Side of the Mountain, and is actually a misquote of that! Pooh Misquoted is an informative read, and for a bit of fun you can buy your favourite Pooh misquote as a wooden mounted rubber stamp so you can spread the misquote forever more.

Looking around there were a rare few articles about these misquotes that stood out amongst the dozens that list these inaccurate Winnie the Pooh and Milne quotes. “Misquoting A. A. Milne” is a wonderful one where JGunn discusses these misquotes, but also has compiled numerous sites that help clarify true origins of Milne misquotes. Many of the articles Gunn lists also look at the tampering and changes to Pooh over the years, all fascinating reading, but they’re not all about misquotes specifically. I think getting any real chance of changing these misquotes are slim, there are too many motivational images and pillows and art pieces that have these incorrect quotes that it’s probably stuck that way forever.

But away from the misquotes that can ruin a good Winnie the Pooh experience, one thing I adore about Pooh is the amount of fan art that has been created by people; everything from crossovers to realistic portrayals, or just fun little drawings. In honour of Milne’s birthday I am sharing a few of my absolute favourites (click image for source).

These ones below are not fan art, but they are my favourite pictures.

These came from my favourite episode of The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Donkey for a Day.

You won’t regret watching it, it’s beautiful.

I could truly sit and write for page after page about what I love about Winnie the Pooh and how it has played a role in my life, but I won’t. Instead, I will leave with the hope that a little bit of Winnie the Pooh has brightened your day today, and maybe you’ve learnt something new; and certainly I am appreciating that even all these decades later, Winnie the Pooh and all of Milne’s wonderful creations are still loved, admired, and appreciated, misquotes or no misquotes.

So in the words of Owl, I say to Milne, HIPY PAPY BTHUTHDTH THUTHDA BTHUTHDY!

Books I’m Looking Forward to in 2016

ReadingThere are so many great books due to come out in 2016, I know I will not get a chance to read all of them, I’m behind the ones I wanted to read for last year and the year before, but I will add them to my TBR pile all the same.

However, there are a few exceptions, a select few books that I will be snatching up as soon as possible and reading right away. The first is The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman. This has no release date yet and a late 2016 publication is tentative at best, but I have been waiting for years for this book to be finally finished and so far from what I’ve read 2016 seems like the year it is possibly going to happen. There isn’t even a cover yet I can admire either which is entirely unfair.

The next one on my list is Awaken by Heather McCollum. The third and final in The Guardians series I cannot wait to read this. I adored the first two (Siren’s Song and Broken) and I have no doubt Awaken will be of the same exhilarating and captivating quality.

Third is Wish List by Belinda Williams. Fourth and final in the City Love series, I am eager to hear Cate’s story and revisit the amazing group of women and William’s engaging writing.

Finally, The Shadow Hour, the second The Girl at Midnight book by Melissa Grey. I wanted this beside me ready to pick up when I finished The Girl at Midnight earlier last year so I will be ready to grab a copy and keep Echo’s story going and find out where Grey is taking her.

Many of these are due later in the year, but it won’t stop me waiting eagerly for them in the meantime. I have a myriad of books to keep me occupied while I wait though which is a good thing in itself.

2015: A Year in Review

NYEThis has been an enjoyable, busy, and strange year both on the blog and not. Through book club, Book Bingo, review requests, and book events I read so many great books and discovered many great authors. With mere hours left on the 2015 clock, I read my last Book Bingo book which was also my 80th book of the year. Having met both my Goodreads Reading Challenge and my Book Bingo was a great feeling. I look forward to starting new challenges for both of them.

In January this year I celebrated my two-year blogiversary which was amazing. I gave away so many great books to people all over the world which was pretty great, especially when they email me and tell me how much they love the book and what it means to them. I also attended numerous writers festivals and book events where I got to meet some of my favourite authors for the first time (or for the third or fourth time), adding their books to my signed book collection.

A highlight of the year was my month dedicated to the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Northern Lights. Rereading those books and getting to share it with you all was amazing, and it allowed me to immerse myself in everything about that series I adore. I participated in NaNo again, which resulted in a few quiet weeks on the blog. Though writing every day and focusing on making a word count makes November fly by and the holiday season hit pretty hard, hence the prolonged scarcity of posts and reviews.

I did learn a few things this year though. This is my third year writing this blog and each one has been different from the other. I’ve had overseas holidays, university, family commitments, and varying levels of busy that take up my time. I am (slowly) learning how to pace myself and what reviews I take in, I am learning that perhaps November and December should be intentionally quieter months to prevent guilt over an unattended blog. I am also learning that as much as I think I can take in dozens of reviews at a time, I just can’t. So next year I am prepared for a tighter system and more structure, more so than what I attempted to do this year at any rate.

Despite how neglected and behind I became towards the end of the year, the more I think about this year the more I realise how fun it was. In some ways the year seems so much longer than it was too. Books I read in June or May feel like a lifetime ago, and events early in the year feel so distant. Quite a surreal experience but good in a way, it makes you realise how much you have actually achieved this year, especially when it doesn’t feel like much.

One of the big changes late in the year was that I got myself a job; in a field I wanted and trained for no less. At the beginning of December I got a job as a librarian which was fantastic. Working in a library has been a dream of mine, so to actually be able to work with books and interact with people who read books is pretty exciting. It is scary and intimidating at times but having visited libraries my whole life it also feels familiar. So that is going to really kick off more next year so I’ll see where it takes me!

Thankfully this end of year wrap up hasn’t become too reflective. It is different than the last two years and that is ok. Rereading those I realise how different I am now, how different the blog is and sometimes you don’t need to be overly reflective. It was a fun year, exciting things happened and I achieved a few new things. I really enjoyed doing my first Book Bingo, it widened my reading and made me read things I may not have picked up. I look forward to doing another next year. Even outside Bingo my reading took a new direction; I took chances on books and read uncomfortable things, I also reacquainted myself with book I’ve loved.

As I enter my fourth year (oh my gosh!) it will be interesting to see what comes up and what 2016 has in store. April marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death so prepare yourself for a lot of Shakespeare. As anyone who has been on Facebook or Twitter when it is Shakespeare Week knows I have a thing for Shakespeare. No doubt I will be attending the NWF and SWF again, hopefully being introduced to a myriad of new authors once more. Other than that I welcome whatever the New Year brings and with my insights, experience, and lessons learnt hope to give you a blog that is better than what it was the previous year.

December Book Haul

Ah, Christmas. The time where every rectangular present is the chance of another book. This year I was very lucky in the book present department with Santa, family, and friends all realising that my shelves are not filled enough with books and that more is always appreciated. I got quite a few books, some I had been looking forward to reading, a few new surprises which is nice. I shan’t be in need of books to read that is for sure (though honestly, when am I ever?).

Merry Christmas!

Toby Xmas2Good morning, all! Christmas has arrived at my house, Santa has come and gone, and there are treats and surprises under my tree ready to be discovered.

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful year, and that any problems and hurdles that have come your way have been met with as many or more delightful experiences and occasions. After a hectic last few months, personally I’m looking forward to a distraction and a breather today before getting things finalised before the new year.

Of course, the best thing to wish for today is that your 25th December is filled with bookish moments, even if that means sneaking away after the prawns and ham at lunchtime to read a sneaky chapter or two before presents are opened!

I would like to say a quick thank you to all my readers and followers this year, especially all the beautiful and talented authors who have given me their books to read. It is incredibly and continually astounding how much faith and trust you put in me to do them justice.

So whether Christmas has yet to reach your home, or whether you are celebrating other festivities this holiday season I hope you have a truly wonderful time and spend it in good company.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Lost in a Good Book!
