Magical Month Begins

Today marks the start of my month-long Harry Potter celebrations! 20 years ago an unknown author published a book called Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and took the world by storm. I was only 9 or 10 years old when the first book was published in Australia, I remember reading it with such fascination. The one copy we had was passed around the family, a tradition which continued for the remaining six books. Now of course I have copies and special editions coming out my ears, but my original set sit faithfully on their shelf, preserving them, lest anything should happen to them.

Since its release, Harry Potter fever has taken over the world. From 8 movies, numerous re-releases and cover changes for the books, a theme park, a website, even a brilliant experience where you get to walk among the movie props and sets.

In an interview from 1999 ,Rowling is asked if she ever expected this kind of reaction from her books to which she replied ‘No. Of course not. I would have been crazy to expect this. No one – no one could have expected this.”  I know she’s had this question a lot over the years, and one that is wonderfully ironic given the line in Philosopher’s Stone where McGonagall says that “There will be books written about Harry, every child in our world will know his name.” A fact that has most certainly come to fruition If 1999 Rowling could see her today. For the last 20 years Harry Potter has moved beyond being a mere children’s book (though was it ever only a children’s book?). Not only is it loved by readers of all ages, it’s the series of a generation; it’s a lifestyle, as close as a religion as it can be. It’s a series that is filled with lessons about friendship, courage, life, and of course, magic.

One of the things I’m looking forward to exploring this month, well, revisiting really, is all the things that make this series beloved by millions. Billions? I’m sure it’s billions by now. I love reading fan theories (even when they are a tad ridiculous and too far fetched), I love seeing people point out seemingly unimportant but fun and curious bits of story that have been forgotten. I especially love seeing all the fan created content that are just magical in their own right, I’m thinking Harry and the Potters, any Hank Green Potter song, A Very Potter Musical, and of course, The Mysterious Ticking Noise.

All of this and more I am eager to get exploring, so much so I have to retrain myself from publishing it all in random bursts of Harry Potter excitement and actually write a cohesive post about. But never fear! There will no doubt be ramblings at some point along the way. It is me after all.

So sit back, relax, put your feet up with a Butter Beer and prepare yourself for the magical journey that is 20 years of Harry Potter.

A Magical Month Awaits!

Important times are almost upon us! June 2017, specifically 26 June, marks the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone; the book that started so many of us on the journey of wonder and amazement as we followed the life of Harry, the Boy Who Lived, the unknown wizard 11 year old who lived under the cupboard of number 4 Privet Drive.

To mark this special occasion I will be embarking on one of my special event months to celebrate everything Harry Potter and the wizarding world. I will be looking at all 7 books, the 8 movies, and offering so many fun facts and fun things that have accumulated over the last 20 years. I will be posting more about the history of the books, JK Rowling, as well as the vast amount of content that has come out since the books, including Pottermore and sneaky snippets Rowling has released since.

If I really sat down and thought about it I could have Harry Potter content running for 6 months nonstop, just based on the incredible theories, the fun facts, and brilliant fan made content, not to mention the deep history and detail that there exists in the books alone. For now, though, I will be limiting it to the single month, but I’m sure, like all the special event months that have come before it, it will be an incredible adventure, and one I hope you will come along with me on.

Let us step into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (spoiler free) by Jack Thorne & John Tiffany, J.K. Rowling

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes darkness comes from unexpected places.

I had mixed feelings about reading this script. I was excited for a new Harry Potter story, but I was also unsure how it would be treated. After years of Rowling feeding us new information and revealing more of the story I was eager to see how the kids of the famous trio were getting on. How the original gang were all enjoying their adult lives and new jobs. I was, however, also worried that it would ruin the magic and the near perfection of the original series. I was worried that it would be a half hearted extension that didn’t have the same depth and feel and immense pleasure of reading. How wrong I was. Don’t get me wrong, there are things about this that make it not perfect, but I stayed with the five stars because while the faults are there, I did so incredibly enjoy it.

From the first page I was back in the Harry Potter world, I could picture it, feel it, it was like we’d never left. I fell hopelessly into the story and fell in love with characters new and old. My heart was overjoyed and breaking for so many reasons and I was barely ten pages in. For a script it felt so much like a story, I have no doubt the one actually used was a bit different again, and no doubt will be changed as the performances go on, but for now I like to imagine this is the one that will be seen on the stage.

A few stage directions are included, as a script would have, and it was fascinating to try and picture how this would be performed on stage, but when I wasn’t doing that I was picturing it in my mind as a novel, the back and forward of my imagination wasn’t an issue, and it was remarkable how a play script could be as evocative as a fully fledged novel that has scenery and more detail given to surroundings and character thoughts.

There are old names I would have loved to have seen included, but understandable this is the next generation’s story and you can’t include the old guard just for nostalgia purposes and to satisfy the long time fans. But those that are included are a joy to read about.

There are surprises, wonderful surprises, and less wonderful surprises, and I can already see opinions divided about the story, but as I say, I loved it, I devoured it. I loved every character for so many reasons, they have come across complex and full as any novel could make them, and it’s wonderful in a way to see the idiolised characters with faults and human mistakes of their own, even in the wonderful wizarding world.

Overall I think the writers did a wonderful job capturing the original Rowling style, and Thorne’s play reflects the amazing world Rowling spent so long creating. I was surprised, delighted, shocked, and concerned about so much in the story and it has certainly provided enough new material and controversial topics for lengthy debating to occur. Whether that is a good thing overall I’m not sure.

I hope your own Harry Potter experience has been spoiler free, and that you derived some enjoyment from the story if you were one of those who were not thrilled at the plot, or the fact it exists at all. Personally, I’m glad it is a play and not a new book, and I’m glad, that while I won’t get to see the play, I could experience it all the same. I could easily and happily see this as a fitting end to Harry’s life and story, but whether that is to be the case, we’ll have to wait and see.

Harry Potter News!

Exciting news Potter fans! This morning it was announced that we are going to get our eighth Harry Potter book after all! A script book of the upcoming play is going to be released in July, the day after the play is first performed in London. This is excellent news for all of us who can’t make it to London to see the play first hand, we won’t miss out on the glory of a new Harry Potter story.

For those who don’t know, the play takes place after book seven, following on from Rowling’s 19 years later epilogue. Harry is working at the Ministry and his children are at school, and it seems everyone is still learning to deal with the aftermath of Harry’s great achievements. A brief synopsis reveals part of what we can expect:

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes darkness comes from unexpected places.

The play is by Jack Thorne, based on an original new story by J. K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany, and is the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage (though we can’t forget the glory that is A Very Potter Musical, as unofficial as it is).

Both a print and digital copies will be released simultaneously after the world premiere on 30th July this year, and according to Pottermore it will comprise of the version of the script at the time of the play’s preview performances.

As exciting as this is, it gets better. Aussie bookseller Booktopia and Amazon.com have already got pre-order links available so you can secure your copy of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I and II. This announcement is clearly the start of some great Harry Potter news, and with the 20th anniversary next year we have only got special editions and many more surprises to look forward to. Pottermore reveals there are going to be four special UK editions of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, one for each Hogwarts house, and there will also be brand new editions of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, with new content by J.K. Rowling, as well as new editions of the Hogwarts Library books – Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

There is so much to look forward to and I’m sure there will be even more surprises to come as the anniversary nears. I know I already have grand plans to celebrate next year and with all these new releases and special editions it’s only going to get better.

Harry Potter Book Night 2016

harry-book-night
February 4 marks the second Harry Potter Book Night. Created through the publishing company Bloomsbury, the first Harry Potter Book Night was held in February 2015. I only learnt about it a couple of weeks ago, but organisation for this year’s events has been in full swing last year with people signing up for kits and other things on the Bloomsbury website to participate in their own Harry Potter parties. According to Bloomsbury, there were 10 500 parties and celebrations held all over the world for their first year, and this year there is set to be even more.

When the event was first created, Bloomsbury’s idea was to invite “schools, bookshops, libraries and community groups to host early-evening events in celebration of Harry Potter Book Night.” Bloomsbury even created a kit for organisers with free download or printed copies being delivered all over the world with everything they would need for a wonderful evening. Kits included things like word searches, craft activities and ideas for Harry Potter themed games, quizzes, and interesting book passages and scenes that could be read aloud. There are also wonderful certificates for those who participate and a myriad of resources for organisers to promote and organise their event. At the time of posting you could still register to receive a downloadable copy of the kit.

46096The theme for the celebrations this year is A Night of Spells and even if you missed the sign up deadline in November for your physical kit, and even if you’re not an organisation, you could still grab a downloadable copy and throw an impromptu party for you and your friends or family that would be just as enjoyable. To start you off The Guardian has even created a quick quiz to test your knowledge of spells for the special night.

If you are like me and didn’t know about this until recently, you can follow the fun of other people’s parties and events on Bloomsbury’s Twitter and Facebook or by using #HarryPotterBookNight. Or, if you really want to join in on the fun, check out Bloomsbury’s interactive world map and see if there is an event near you that you can attend!

Harry Potter Book Night kicks off tomorrow in the UK but Australia will begin theirs tonight so if you are looking for something to do, perhaps it’s the perfect time to bring a bit of magic into your evening with A Night of Spells and a little Harry Potter magic.
