Bloggers Dinner

Just a quick post, I know it is very late but I wanted to share. I just came home from a great dinner in Sydney with Suzie from Suz’s Space and Jess from The Never Ending Book Shelf and it was so fun. The dinner was organised by Suzie and it was a great chance to catch up, especially since I hadn’t seen Suzie since the Book Bloggers Forum last year. Suzie chose a great restaurant called Whispers Cafe at Parramatta which was really nice, and their food was pretty great as well.

While dinner ended up being a bit more brief than originally planned, it was no less enjoyable. The conversation was fun and it was great as we got to know one another a bit better. Topics discussed covered a many number of things but naturally the discussion soon turned to blogging and it was wonderful (as it always is) to discuss with others in your situation the ups and downs of blogging, interesting stories about the blogging life, various types of blogs out there (and why I could never run a food blog).

Even though there was just the three of us it was still a great night out. The trip to Parramatta was an adventure and the great dinner company made the trip worthwhile. I hope there are more little casual catch ups away from festivals and organised formal events because sometimes a chat over a nice meal in a nice restaurant is just as good!

Happy Easter!

EasterA very happy Easter to you all! I hope the Easter bunny was good to you this year and if you were lucky enough to also get a long weekend, then I hope you enjoyed a nice break. I spent my long weekend relaxing and surprise, surprise, some reading! Which while not that much of a stray from my usual routine (but usually with less relaxing), it was still very nice. Easter Sunday was spent eating too much chocolate which resulted in me feeling slightly ill but as my mother said, “I don’t think it’s Easter without making yourself sick on chocolate” so that makes it ok. Having been going non-stop for months it felt very strange doing almost nothing, even if it was only three days and it made me feel like I hadn’t done anything in weeks which was quite disorientating. I had to remind myself that it had only been three days and the world was not going to come to an end. Today I started busying myself again so while still in long weekend mode I was trying not to get too complacent and fall behind again.

In honour of the Easter long weekend, I thought I would quickly provide you with some Easter Fun Facts because who doesn’t love a good fun fact?

Easter Fun Fact #1

While the bunny was used as early as the 1500s in Germany when discussing Easter, the first mention of the Easter Bunny bringing eggs for Easter was in a book by Georg Frankck von Frankenau in 1680. The book was called “De ovis paschalibus” (About Easter Eggs) and refers to the tradition of bringing eggs to children.

Easter Fun Fact #2

The word Easter dates back to early England and is thought to relate to Ēostre, Pagan goddess of spring and fertility.

Easter Fun Fact #3

The reason the Easter date always changes is because it’s based on the lunar calendar and the position of the moon. Easter is celebrated on the Sunday after the full moon following March 21st. Which sounds like a very complicated way to deal with things.

Easter Fun Fact #4

The first Easter egg was made in 1873 by Fry’s of Bristol. Which you can read more about in my Easter post from last year.

Easter Fun Fact #5

The tradition of giving eggs at Easter has been traced back to Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans, for whom the egg was a symbol of life.

So there you go, some nice things you may not have realised about Easter. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and managed not to get any chocolate on your books!

Happy Australia Day!

Australia DayAh Australia Day. That annual time of year to celebrate what makes Australia great, to enjoy the long weekend with friends and family, and to cringe at people who feel the need to wear the Australian flag as a cape. The beaches, parks, and backyards around the country are filled with people enjoying themselves and having barbeques, and there are people with temporary flag tattoos on their cheeks, shoulders, and other body parts, while others wear a range of flag-themed clothing like thongs, shorts, and hats.

Google has given us a great Australian Google Doodle for the occasion as per usual and Twitter trends are filled with all things Australian whether it is #youknowyouareaustralianwhen or the slightly cynical #FiveWordsToRuinAustraliaDay. But most of the messages about Australia Day are positive but every year there is something that puts a damper on the day in the news (this year is no exception). But mostly people like to celebrate what makes being an Australian whether it is tags like the #youknowyouareaustralianwhen one on Twitter, or those cringe-worthy and mostly incorrect lists articles that talk about how to know you are Australian. These are often widely stereotypical and wrong, for starters it’s not shrimp, its prawn, and no one drinks Fosters, but they can be fun and people mean well.

Personally I enjoy Australia Day, even if I am not doing anything special to celebrate. This year my Australia Day is not that different from previous years, though we are currently experiencing a mozzie plague which may put a damper on any outdoor activities, the threat of Ross River Fever will do that, and the fact that today is a little bit rainy, but interestingly not actually cold, because that’s the magic of our summer weather. (Oh, the humidity!). I love seeing people enjoying themselves though and highlighting what makes our country great, and even if all I end up doing today is scrolling through a Twitter tag, eating a lammie, or just relaxing at home, it is still a pretty wonderful Australia Day.

But away from the threat of disease, no plans, and poor weather onto more delightful topics, this of course being books, more importantly Aussie books! If you can’t talk about Aussie books and authors on Australia day when can you? Recently Booktopia has been on a mission to find Australia’s favourite authors. After multiple rounds and numerous eliminations, they have released the final ten in their search for the Top Ten Australia Authors as voted by you guys. From the beginning each round has been filled with so many great Aussie authors and while it was sad when some favourites were cut in each round, with the top ten released I can see why these great authors made the final cut. With names such as John Marsden, Mem Fox, Liane Moriarty, Kerry Greenwood, and Matthew Reilly it reminds you that Australia really does produce some amazingly talented authors. You can check out the full list on Booktopia’s website where you can also check out the great range of books each of these authors has, you never know, you may find a new favourite Aussie author!

So that’s all from me, I hope you are all having a wonderful Australia Day whether you are celebrating with a lammie, an ANZAC bikkie, a BBQ, or all three combined, behave yourselves, have fun, and read something spectacular.

2015 Goals

Review policyGoals are always fun to make, though I am not sure how well I am going to be able to keep them but I am determined to try. These are not resolutions mind you, just a few things I want to do this year with reading and the blog.

This year I have no Uni to get in my way and I am determined to stay relaxed even when it gets busy and hectic on the blog. One thing I have been good at is being organised and making plans, I suppose we can credit Uni for helping me hone in on that skill. With requests already coming in I have the chart going of books and the order in which to read them, I have plans and ideas with full intentions of fulfilling them, and I’m trying not to feel like I am being unproductive so early in the year. Though I have done some things, my review policy is finally up which is a relief, and I have updated the review catalogue. I have also been going through old reviews and adding purchase links, so to give myself some credit I haven’t been as unproductive as I first thought.

In terms of reading and books this year I have a few different things I want to do. I’ve seen a few interesting Bingo style reading challenges recently and I was thinking of picking one of those and working it into my plans. It should be fun having to find a book among my many to suit what’s in the box, finding the best way to get Bingo, reading books from a female, from this year, a certain genre, whatever other categories there may be. I think it is a fun way to look at reading, and it really makes your reading diverse.

I am also on a quest to reread. Very foolish I know, but I want to reread some of the great books I have enjoyed, like the Harry Potter series, or Paper Towns before the movie comes out. I know with hundreds of unread books on my shelf this is unwise but when you have the need why ignore it?

Outside the blog I have goals of tidying and cataloguing the books on my shelf. My list of books has not been updated in the longest time and I fear counting just how many I have added in the time since. But this is not a pressing goal, more of a ‘if things are not too busy and I have some time’ kind of job. But I think if I am going to go to as many book sales, festivals, and events as I did last year I need an updated list or I am going to end up with doubles which is just annoying.

Exciting news though, tomorrow is my two year blogiversary which has come along way too fast. That is the problem with starting a blog at the beginning of the year; anniversaries sneak up while you are recovering from the holiday season. Still, two years is a pretty great achievement. I am going to be running a giveaway to celebrate but more on that tomorrow.

Whether these are classed as real goals or not I don’t know, but I am classing them as goals. I have learnt not to overcommit myself with this blog and not plan to do too many things at once, I have disappointed myself in the past by not getting to complete the grand things i wanted to complete so I have kept my expectations small this time around. But no matter how small they may seem I am curious as to how it will go, and I am really eager to read some of the great books on my shelves and really excited about what this year will bring.

I look forward to keeping you up to date with my reading Bingo and all the other great things I experience this year and seeing how this year develops as a result. I’m sure it is going to be wonderful!

Happy (Belated) New Year, Everyone!

NYELook who has returned! I have not disappeared in the mysteriousness that is New Year. I know this is a terrible way to start the year, being absent for the first ten days and I promise this is not a foreshadowing of what the year will be like. It was just so hard to pull myself away from the relaxing time I was having doing nothing to actually start doing something. After a hectic Christmas and December it was so wonderful being able to relax after everything wound down after New Year so I am not really going to apologise any further.

I have noticed though that a lot of my holiday posts seem to be belated recently but as I say I was so busy over Christmas and through December I was really enjoying the week (and a bit) of doing nothing but watching TV and eating leftovers. I will say I started the year out with good intentions. I began the new year reading which was very productive I thought. I read one of my brilliant QI fact books that I had gotten for Christmas on New Year’s Day. It was fantastic, just like the others were.

One thing that has dragged me away from my relaxation is the fact I am now house sitting. I was hoping to use this house sitting time to be productive and separate myself from the distractions of home, but with two golden retrievers and the internet at my fingertips it has yet to prove useful. But at only two days in and eight days left anything could happen. I know once I start writing I will get back into the hang of it, but having a break over Christmas really stops your flow, it is a lot of work to get yourself back into the regular routine. Which is true for everything I suppose. I always marvelled that after six weeks off over Christmas, the first day back at school always feels like you’ve never left. Without the luxury of being forced back into blogging by government laws I must make my own motivations and I am taking the guilt trip route. Too much time off is never a good thing and it makes me feel unproductive.

So now I’m sitting here, on a strange computer, contemplating and trying to find the motivation that is going to kick off my year. I am contemplating to the new album by The Script at the moment which I have to say it is brilliant. There is something particularly magnificent about listening to powerful songs at full volume, it gets your heart going, you feel like you can conquer the world and there is nothing you cannot do. This is how I am going to motivate myself into diving head first into this year. I have allowed myself the luxury of a week (plus a bit more) of relaxing and now it is time to get going again. New year, new goals, and new motivations!

One of the first things I must do is thank everyone who is already sending in review requests. It is good to see having to close submissions for so long last year has not affected things too much which make me so pleased. I hope more come and I look forward to reading all your wonderful books as well as many more throughout the year. One of my goals for the year is to try and read some of the books I already own as well so I am implementing a “one request, one owned” system to try and get through my TBR pile, but more on my goals later.

I should also add in here I hope you all had a wonderful New Year’s doing whatever it was you were doing. I had a great night, I had some friends over for a mini soiree where we played some games, drank wine, and watch the fireworks both on TV and those nearby. If you do not yet know about my absolute fascination and adoration of fireworks you must catch yourself up. Two important things to remember are that I will never say a bad word about them and that they must be watched at every possible chance for whatever reason.

I have many wonderful things planned for this year. I have a blogiversary coming up super soon and many goals which I will fill you all in on later when I know about them myself! I am looking to get a review up in the next day or two as well meaning this year is definitely (and finally) in full swing here at Lost in a Good Book!

So welcome to 2015 everyone, may good books be forever at your disposal, and you read something spectacular!
