“”Girl,” my mama had said to me the minute she entered my hospital room, “on the highway of life, you’re always traveling left of center.” (from “Traveling Left of Center)” What happens when people face life situations for which they are emotionally or mentally unprepared? They may choose to allow fate to dictate the path they take-a decision that can lead to disastrous results. The characters in “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories” are unable or unwilling to seize control over their lives, relying instead on coping methods that range from the passive (“The Healer”) and the aggressive (“The Clock”) to the humorous (“Traveling Left of Center”) and hopeful (“Skating on Thin Ice”). But the outcomes may not be what they anticipated or desired. Will they have time to correct their course or will they crash?

Note: I was provided a copy of this book for review

I think the thing I love most about short stories is the fact that they can have the power to move you, and that you can get so caught up in a character and their lives in such a short amount of time. There is a skill in creating a story that is capable of this and Christie does just that.

With her collection of stories, Christie demonstrates the consequences and reactions of people who are faced with situations and circumstances for which they are not mentally or emotionally prepared for. Through 18 captivating and unique short stories, Christie explores the way in which each of these characters responds to the pressure placed upon them and she does so with variety, style, creativity, and poignancy.

What makes these stories great to read is the diversity Christie includes; not only in how each character responds to these pressures, but the circumstances and types of scenarios in which they appear. There is also an air of dark humour, despair, and hopelessness for Christie’s characters. They express feelings of human experience and emotion well and show that there are numerous ways one can be trapped in their own life, bound by forces conscious, physical, or otherwise.

Each one of Christie’s stories has a character with a voice and a story that is unique and fascinating. She uses her characters nicely and makes them shown us their stories and with just a few lines, words, and actions, demonstrating who they are extremely well and capturing the despair, the loss, and the frustration in their situations. The use of voice is so well done and with the style and tone varying from story to story each one manages to pull you into their world immediately and understand who they are.

What I liked about some of these characters is that they give the impression that are in control, or that they know what they are doing, but it is clear that this isn’t the case. The stories are full of people who seem to be lost, insecure, and lacking confidence and conviction, looking for something they can’t find or are unaware they’ve even lost. They seem trapped by circumstance and the lies they tell themselves, convincing themselves and others they are in control when in fact they are simple consciously or unconsciously ignoring the problems with themselves or their situation.

This is a collection you definitely cannot stop reading. The pace is fast but engaging, and you never know what a story will bring nor how it will end up. Christie captivates you with characters and stories from the very first page and you get drawn in the lives of each character so completely and so quickly it is wonderful.

Excerpt:

“Leave,” James repeats. The word sweeps over the boys surrounding me like an icy cold breeze from the asscrack of Antarctica. He’s really got the serial killer vibe going on. Even I have to resist the urge to jump up and run for the hills. I don’t blame my harem for scattering, leaving me sitting exposed and undefended on the counter, at the mercy of James Reid.

I point at him. “You scared away my harem.”

“Those guys were looking at you like you’re a piece of meat.” His tone is thick with disgust.

“Technically I am a piece of meat. Plus bones and stuff. Also, don’t you think that’s a bit hypocritical?”

I expect him to scoff at this, to shrug it off or deny it. Instead he cuts his eyes away from me. “I’m sorry,” he says finally. “I shouldn’t have jump—”

“Jump-started my car for me,” I interrupted loudly, fully aware that Sigrid is straining to listen in on our conversation, even if she is across the room. “You’re right. You should have just let me take it to the shop. Some things should be done by professionals.”

A ghost of a smile traces its way upward from the corners of his lips. It’s the first time I’ve seen him smile, and damn, is it dangerous. I swallow and look away. “Although—even though I know that I shouldn’t have let you near my car, and you’re definitely not coming near it again, you don’t need to apologize. At the time, I really wanted you to jump-start my car.”

My phone buzzes. I glance down. A text from Iris. Think of a better euphemism. You’re not being subtle.

“Did you just say I’m not a professional?” he asks, leaning one-handed on the counter so that his thumb is bare inches away from my thigh. He’s close enough to count the goose pimples that appear on my skin.

“Definitely an amateur,” I smirk.

His hand inches closer. “Why don’t you call me next time your car needs some work done and I’ll show you more of what I’m capable of.”

Bargain Books

I went to a book sale this morning. I almost didn’t go but I came away with some great books so that’s something. I managed to add more to my Babysitter Club collection by getting another one I was missing. I also added to my old hard cover Enid Blyton stories, grabbing a few more of those as well. Looking for the BSC books made me remember reading them obsessively as a kid. I am tempted to pull out the box they are stored in to give them another go. Oh could you imagine!

I have noticed that when you come to book sales there will always be the same books. Of course there are thousands of others but I bet without fail you will find some or all of the following books:

The Da Vinci Code
The Horse Whisperer
Angela’s Ashes
Eat, Pray, Love
The Help
50 Shades of Grey trilogy
The first and third book of a series, not the second
Any Danielle Steel novel
Or Michael Connolly
Or Mathew Reilly
Or Wilbur Smith
The Jane Austen classics

But you also find books that you love and you are shocked to find it on the table because it’s a brilliant book and why would anyone want to get rid of it. And you know there is no point in owning two copies so you don’t rescue it, instead you leave it there hoping someone else will pick it up and love it. Todays’ such finds were Winter by John Marsden and His Dark Materials, surprisingly number two was there!

The first stop in any book sale is always the children’s books. Partly to get the best books first and partly to get there before the nice rows get messed up and turn into one heap of books. The annoying part is the boxes under the tables, so you do one of two things, go all along the top then go back the other way looking underneath, or you go top and bottom as you shuffle your way along the rows, naturally squeezing inbetween people who have chosen to browse your aisle as well.

In the hour I spent there I bought ten books, mixed kids and fiction but I picked up more. I put about six back that I decided didn’t need to be bought. I was very proud, deciding that getting them from the library would suffice or I wasn’t 100% convinced I wanted to read it so not to waste the money on it.

I’m fairly happy with my final choices, for a grand total of $8 I got:

More Irish Fairy Tales by Sinead de Valera

BSC Mystery – Kristy and the Missing Child by Ann M. Martin

On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta

Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty

Toyland Tales by Enid Blyton

Mr Pink-Whistle Interferes by Enid Blyton

10 Short Stories You Must Read in 2010 collection

Chitty Chitty Bang bang by Ian Fleming

The Sheep Pig by Dick King-Smith

The Hums of Pooh by A. A. Milne

And since I just got a new bookcase, I don’t have to worry about where to put them anymore so I don’t even have to feel guilty about taking up space! So wins all round!

Hope[Less] Synopsis

Our world is being judged, and we remain unaware.

In a world filled with people, Gabby is uniquely alone. The tiny glowing sparks that fill her mind and represent the people around her, confirm it.

Clueless regarding the reason behind her sight, Gabby struggles to find an explanation. A chance encounter leads her closer to the answers she has struggled to find and into a hidden society where fur is optional. There she meets Clay, the intense werewolf delusional enough to think he has a chance with her.

Gabby escapes back into her old life, but not quite alone. Clay follows her and silently makes a place for himself in her world. As if that isn’t enough to deal with, problems compound when other werewolves, ones with abnormally colored sparks, begin to stalk her.

Instead of gaining answers, her list of questions is growing. What do the other uniquely colored sparks mean? Is she not as alone as she thought?

Judgement has begun…

[Mis]Fortune Synopsis

Our world is being judged and even they remain unaware.

Michelle, another young woman with an unexplainable gift, finds herself surrounded by the previously undiscovered werewolf society. Kept prisoner for the predictions that torment her, she meekly follows orders waiting for her opportunity to run. When her stepfather dies, she takes a chance and escapes.

After witnessing Blake, her captor, grow canines, she knows he will do anything to find her. She needs a place to hide and someone to listen to her predictions so her head doesn’t explode, but knows there’s nowhere she can hide forever, and no one who can protect her… unless she can find someone just like him.

Part of the fur wearing faction wants to use her, another part strives to keep her safe. The second book of the Judgement of the Six series will raise more questions about the purpose of these gifted few and Michelle will need to fight for answers. Will what she discovers be enough to help her keep those she loves safe from an emerging evil?

[Un]Wise Synopsis

The dreams start and Bethi’s very normal life goes down the toilet. Reliving past lives, where Dog-men chase her and she sees her eventual tormented death, Bethi sets out to find a way to live this time around. The dreams hint at an answer. She needs to be strong enough to find it, or die…

The third installment of the Judgement of the Six answers questions, questions answers, and risks the fate of the world.

[Un]Bidden Synopsis

I left home because I didn’t want to end up in a cage like a lab rat. Hitching rides, begging for cash, and sleeping on the ground got old fast. That was the only reason I braved an overgrown path to a group of buildings. I’d hoped to find a bed and a decent night’s sleep. However, what I found was a place overrun by werewolves.

While on the run, Charlene finds herself surrounded by werewolves, creatures she can’t control with her mind like she can humans. Their existence has her believing she’s found a safe place to stay, a place where secrets are okay. However, she soon discovers she’s anything but safe. Charlene must learn how to use her abilities to influence the strange new species because if she can’t, the next bite she suffers might just kill her.

Read how the cycle begins, and have no doubt. Charlene’s past will shape the future of the Judgments.
