6th Blogiversary Celebrations + Giveaway (INT) (DRAWN)

Lost in a Good Book is turning 6! Where does the time go? I feel so in charge of this blog finally. It’s been a long and hard road but I am glad I’ve found a system that works for me. I have stopped trying to make my blog run like others. After reading so many advice posts over the years on how to blog, after trying to mimic other blogs and tying myself into knots over scheduling and features and stressing myself out I have found my own path.

On top of feeling impressed with myself, I’m also feeling reflective and bureaucratic this blogiversary so I’ve taking up the challenge to see how my stats are fairing. I used to look at these religiously but the past few years I have only given them a cursory glance.

I’ve poured through 6 years of statistics to find the best, the most, the detailed numbers surrounding my blog. I’ve looked at the genre breakdown and the star ratings, I’ve looked at my most popular posts and the countries who come to visit. What I would have loved to do is compare the Australian authors to international that I’ve reviewed, but that will need a lot more planning because my tags aren’t nearly as organised in those early years regarding Aussie authors (they aren’t the best now if I’m honest). and there was no way I was sorting through that mess right now. Maybe next year.

It was quite a fascinating trip in all honestly. I was amazed at the numbers and at how many of each genre I had read, not to mention my generosity of stars. It also made me realise just how far I have come in 6 years. As I enter my 7th I am looking at my followers grow all the time and the visitors to my blog increase. I had more people visit my blog in the first 11 days of January this year than I had in the entirety of 2013 which is unfathomable. I can’t help but feel a little proud.

Let’s break it down. I’ve created a handy infograph because who doesn’t love a good infograph?

All of these stats are amazing, and surprising in their own way. For someone who didn’t think she liked fantasy I have reviewed it A LOT. But no doubt I’ve missed some reviews, and certainly if I’ve messed up some genre tagging the numbers may be a smidge off but honestly, they mean so little; community engagement and just having people read and like what I review and ramble about is so wonderful. I remember loving the one person who would read every single post I posted back in 2013. They were often the only stat on my blog. I loved this one person and I loved that they took the time to read the words I’d carefully thought about.

In the past 6 years I have seen so many changes. I have tried and failed many blog features. Let’s salute the forgotten such as Weekly Wrap Up, From the Shelf, Birthday Book Bonanza, not to mention Library Loot! Gosh, can you imagine if I kept that up it would be a daily post about all the things I bring home from work? It would publicise the very real problem I have. But it’s not all forgotten features, I’ve also introduced The Picture Book Corner which I adore, have Bookish Bites to help me write those quick reviews, plus started participating in Long Lost Reviews, who knows what else I will create or even bring back!

Looking back I have also halved my review lengths, which I think we’re all thankful for. I know I can go on a lot now but in the beginning, I used to go on A LOT. My reviewing has improved which I can tell just by reading some older posts. It’s amazing to see how I ran the blog back in the early years. Every year I did things a little bit differently and I have finally found my groove and I am happy to settle into this rhythm and power on.

Today is not all about my blog statistics, it is also a chance to share some of the amazing books I have read this past year. I have chosen my Top Five of 2018 plus a few other amazing books to include in my giveaway this year. As per usual, the giveaway is open internationally.

5th Blogiversary Celebrations + Giveaway (INT) (DRAWN)

I can’t say I even thought about doing this for five years when I started out. I don’t think I even thought how long I would be doing this for. I remember reading other people’s five-year posts when I have been in the game less than a year and marvelling at how long that was. Now, having reached that milestone myself, I can’t believe how time has flown.

My review style has changed in five years, my writing voice has changed in five years. I have certainly gotten into my own rhythm which took a few years to discover. I probably have felt better blogging this year than maybe in the last four. This wasn’t something I entirely noticed, but there was something I realised I was missing that I have had in past years; stress and guilt. I didn’t have any stress and didn’t have any guilt this past year. Not to the extremes I have had almost every past year at least. I seemed to have taken my 2017 goal of stressing less and relaxing about blogging to heart, even partially unconsciously.

In order to celebrate five years of blogging (and five years of rambling and gushing all over the interweb), I am offering a giveaway of some of my favourite books. The books I am giving away include my Top Five from last year, as well as a few of my favourite books I’ve read or reread in the last five years. One book I am excited to add to the list is Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A. S. King which has FINALLY been published in Australia (thank you Text Publishing!).  I have also included Becky Albertelli’s latest book, (at least until her new one comes out), The Upside of Unrequited, And I couldn’t not throw in Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones which is one of my all-time favourite YA books (don’t judge it by the movie, it’s a hilarious and delightful experience).

Since it’s a mini milestone of five years I am giving TWO lucky people the chance to win and once again I am opening it up internationally as long as The Book Depository ships to your country. If you want to check out the books in more detail I’ve included some links below, I have actually reviewed most of these so that’s a little bit of extra guidance.

I want to thank everyone for supporting me for all these years, who knows what will happen in the next five years but I am certainly excited to find out.

Good luck to all entrants and happy reading!

The Selection

La Belle Sauvage (The Book of Dust) by Philip Pullman

Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A. S. King

The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson

4th Blogiversary Celebrations + Giveaway! (INT)

2yr AnniversaryAs I celebrate my fourth year of blogging I cannot believe how fast the time has gone. When I look back at previous posts I am amazed at the books I have read, astounded by all the support I’ve received, and, to be honest, a little embarrassed when I read older posts. But we were young, inexperienced, we thought we sounded cool and grown up at the time but now a few of those earlier posts could do with some more editing and sophistication and less…stream of conscious and randomness.

But of course the other side of that is I have loved seeing how I’ve grown over the years. My reviewing has become refined and more structured, I’ve worked out my style and my voice, and while I am still really settling into a good rhythm, I am getting closer every day. I saw a wonderful tweet from Jean at Happy Indulgence Books that expressed this beautifully.

I think that as I enter my fifth year of blogging I am getting to the stage where I am doing it my way. Last year was my stressfully year, probably the year before in part, but I’m finally at a point where I can see what I am doing and be content. Having said that, I know full well there will be times this year when I am stressed, the beginning of the year always brings such hope and promise. But one of my goals for the year was not to worry so much about blogging. I started this to enjoy it, to love sharing my thoughts on books and I am determined to keep doing that.

Part of enjoying the experience is getting to share great books with you guys! It is customary to celebrate this milestone with a giveaway to all my fantastic followers and readers who have stuck by me for the years of random posts and weeks and months of absence for some reason or another. This year I have selected a handful of my favourite books from the previous year. A few have missed out because The Book Depository doesn’t have them so a few proper favourites missed out which is a shame. Either way, the eight I have chosen were some of my favourites and cover a range of genres so there should be something for everyone.

I am giving ONE lucky person the chance to win and I am opening it up internationally. If you want to check out the books in more detail I’ve included some links below. I wish I had been able to review more because I want to tell you how amazing these books are, but it hasn’t happened yet unfortunately.

Thank you again for supporting me for all these years and I look forward to doing this for many more years. Good luck to all entrants and happy reading!
