When did November arrive? Call first November, we’re not ready!

So! November has snuck up on us once again and now it is almost half over. I am doing so much this month and I am being stubborn and not giving any of it up so it has been stressful and chaotic and interesting to say the least. I have uni work coming at me from every angle, assignments that decide they all want to be due the same week or on the day day, I am behind on my NaNo word count (though with a two day reprieve from uni work I managed to close the gap a smidge), and I am determined to keep reading even if it is just a chapter or two a day just so I can escape the madness and actually finish a book some time soon and not let this beloved blog of mine fall into disarray.

I hope all of you out there who are doing NaNo are powering through. NaNo (short for NaNoWriMo which is short for National Novel Writing Month) is an excellent competition where the goal is to write a 50 000 word novel in the month of November. Because of uni not finishing until some time in November I have always started late. This was ok in my undergrad degree because it was usually like the 10th, or 8th, only once on the 17th, but I still won and reached by 50k. Then one year I was given the full 30 day writing spree which was divine…until my Masters. Now uni doesn’t finish until the end of the month which means we cannot ignore NaNo until we’re done, so we are doing it all side by side. But I adore NaNo, it is wonderful, which is why I am not letting the fact I have uni assignments and exams until the 29th deter me from following my yearly NaNo quest.

This is my sixth year and I know it can be tough, especially those moments when you cannot think of where to take your plot. The best advice I can give is to just write, write anything, start describing your character eating a meal or doing housework, have them look at their surroundings and find something strange, anything, because I know from experience if you force yourself to write, your mind will kick in and you will start to create scenes and get the ideas as you go. You just need to begin and let your imagination do its magic, over thinking is never a good thing.

I remember a few years ago I had been planning my NaNo story for months, since about April. I had it all planned out, characters, plots, even basic ideas for dialogue and conflicts. Come November I started to write and realised that I did not know where to begin. I had already done so much that I could not think of where to start writing. I changed my idea and still managed to win which was wonderful but I realised that you can over plan a bit too much. Don’t get me wrong, planing is excellent, knowing your characters and where you want them to go and experience will start you on a wonderful path and help guide you as the month goes on, but even if you haven’t got a basic plan set out yet do not feel like you cannot just start in the middle of your story or with a random scene and work your way out from there. Currently my story is broken into so many fractured scenes across so many different years it is a mess, but I know that the best thing for me to do is when I get an inspiration for a scene, or hear dialogue in my head, is not put it off until I chronologically reach that point because I will have forgotten it by then most likely, or it will not have the same fire behind it that it had when I first thought of it.

The rule I learnt from NaNo is ‘Quantity not quality’ followed by ‘November is for writing, December is for editing’. DO NOT EDIT! Relish in those little red squiggles and the fact you find yourself breaking contractions into possible grammatically incorrect sentences just to add an extra word in, that is half the fun, once you reach that 50k you will be feeling wonderful. Then you can ride the glory wave and realise it was not as hard as you thought and maybe you didn’t need to make so many trivial or unimportant scenes because you still haven’t finished your story. That is when you just keep writing and see how far you go before the strike of 12 on the 30th. I wish all participants the best of luck, and if I do not make it to 50k after all my motivational babble then I shall be terribly cross. But my stubbornness will keep me going, uni shall not defeat me this year, it hasn’t before and it won’t start now. Oh also, WriteorDie is your friend, your saviour and a god among writing programs. Take this and use it well to reach your glory. (ALL HAIL THE GLOW CLOUD WRITEORDIE!)

Since I won’t bore you with the uni traumatics, I will let you know I am still reading Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne, one slow chapter at a time. It is rather interesting to say the least. It is so much better than that terrible movie with Steve Coogan and Jackie Chan may I say, so don’t look at that as a basis for the book. It is very detailed in the descriptions as well as the complicated journey, some may say dull but I don’t think so, you get used to it after awhile. I suspect this is so you can understand just how the journey was taken and the route they took. I am only about halfway through but it is worth the read I assure you.

And before I go, yes I know I just spent too much time writing this when I had two assignments and NaNo I could have been writing but that is besides the point. My story plot is always butting in to brain when I am trying to do uni work and uni guilt is hanging over me no matter what I do so why not ignore them both for an hour or so and do something else.

Update (aka I’m still alive and kicking)

NewsI have not disappeared, I promise. But it seems the reviewing, and the reading to be honest, has been pushed aside sadly. In 7 days I am going to the UK for three weeks (*silent freak out*) and then I think we will really have some proper intentional absence. But I am going to try and get some more reviews done before I go but I  just wanted to check in and say I hadn’t forgotten you all. I am still trying to share things on Facebook and Twitter because it is easier, but they too are a bit neglected. There can be a thing as too much free time I think.

Anyway I hope you are all wrapped up warm and reading in my absence though (of those of you in Summer you are outside reading wonderful things). I just finished The Heiresses by Alison Rushby which was awesome, and I am still fighting to finish Vice Versa. I want so bad to like it but it is just so hard! The next book is going to be a tough choice, I have a long plane trip ahead of me, I must chose wisely.

Have a great afternoon and I promise the review for The Heiresses should be up soon and hopefully more catch up posts as well *fingers crossed*. Oh and quick reminder, there is still four weeks to go on the giveaway (US & Aust) but just remember, you have to tweet the Goodreads link the Copper Girl, then let me know your Twitter name in the comments of the post so I can check, doing that gets you two entries automatically. There are more details on the post itself. Good luck if you’ve entered!

News!…News?

NewsHey guys!

This isn’t news exactly but we will class it as such anyway. Well it is technically…either way.

So this is the new site, as you can see it is very much like the old one which is excellent; also hello to any newcomers who have come straight here and not from my post on the previous site. I will not do a big thing about the move or more venting, I feel just moving on past it and getting settled back into a routine is best. Uni has finished for three whole months so I am full of free time to read and finally catch up on reviews, so apologies for delays there.

But also heads up, in July I am going to the UK for a few weeks *squeal* so my chances of posting for the first three weeks may be slim, but that is not to say I will not try my hardest to keep it going.

In the chaos of the blogs and the exams and the sleep deprivation I missed a couple birthday posts which is a shame. One I really wanted to highlight was John Connolly, the author behind the Charlie Parker series and the awesome beyond awesome novel ‘The Book of Lost Things’.  My review for that is here if you haven’t read it, and I had grand plans to read a Charlie Parker novel by his birthday and get the birthday post up but again, uni. So instead I will just put it out in the world that I will be reading that and reviewing that soon I hope, my library isn’t the best at having popular books so we will see how we go.

The other birthday we missed was Thomas Hardy who wrote Tess of the D’Urbervilles. That was a great book I read a few years ago for uni, it was certainly unexpected. I will try and get my review for that up at some point as well; I think you should all read that. Though if we start discussing all the books I’ve read I think you should read we’d be here for days, and who has days with all this free time around that I need to use to catch up on all the things I have been postponing for three months?

But anyway, thank you for following me here, thank you for finding me here for all the newbies, and I hope you find some great books and book related things. Despite my free time I will be maintaining my Monday, Wednesday, Friday system (exceptions again are birthday posts) but they may not always be reviews.

Also as usual there are more book and reading related things on the Facebook and Twitter pages that don’t make it to the blog, those links have not changed. I will leave you all now as I have a bit of unpacking to do around the place and putting everything in its rightful place takes time.

Have a great afternoon and read something spectacular.

Star Wars Day

We will ignore the fact that this site is ruining the greatest day ever by having a hissy fit about comments and not letting people through, yes you blog.com! And instead we will enjoy Star Wars Day happily and merrily and remind people they can still comment on Facebook.

I recently undertook a Star Wars marathon which was glorious. I insist that every one should do this, and I also insist that you watch them originals and then prequels. You will do yourself no good watching them 1-6 because it ruins practically everything in 4-6 by watching 1-3 first.

I will say I hold A New Hope (IV) as a high favourite because it was the one I saw first, however I rather enjoyed Revenge of the Sith (III), but that one pretty much confirms the idea you have to watch them old then new. And then when you think about it they were all amazing, yes even the other prequels, though there are some serious cringe-worthy moments in them. I was 11 when I saw the first prequel, and being young and naive I really liked it. Now I can see the flaws, but there are still good moments, and they are good films, as odd sequel prequels. It is much better to see where it began after the fact than try and watch it chronologically.

There are many Star Wars books, a lot of them extending storylines after films and looking at where and how characters ended up. There are a lot. They have been going awhile, list is here. There are a range of different books and facts and artworks and a whole collection of Star Wars content that goes beyond the films. Even the television shows and the merchandise probably is on par with what the fans have created.

As favourite characters go I have and always will be a Chewy fan, but I have got a soft spot for the Ewoks, I am not entirely sure why but I do. What I find interesting it the fact people go on about the Luke/Leia kiss, and I always thought she only kissed him out of spite to annoy Han. No? Luke may have had his own agenda but I thought it was Leia and Han from the early beginning. I may be wrong, I may have missed something, but that is what I like to think.

So have a happy Star Wars Day, and let us have a proper think about what the next lot of Star Wars films could bring now that Disney is in charge, they did do Avengers, but they also did [insert all their bad attempts at doing serious live action films]. I eagerly wait and see, and surely having Lucas out of range with all his fiddling is better? Maybe? I don’t know, it always makes me think of that Simpsons episode where Bart and Lisa go to Cosmic Wars Ranch and meet “Randell Curtis” to discuss the horrible turn his films have taken. I did always think that ‘The Gathering Shadow’ take on The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones was exaggerated, but when I watched them again I realised it was rather accurate, and that made me slightly sad. But really, I think aside from a few story history fillers, there is little real adventure in the prequels, it is very political and the action only adds to providing back story. But we love them, and they make us happy. So whether you are a original movie only person, or an all in 6 movie, TV shows, lego games, board games, fan fiction, novels, novelty toys, lightsabre wielding person, have a great day, watch some Star Wars, read some Star Wars, or just share some Star Wars with the uninitiated!

Questions from Jess

1. What made you want to start blogging?
I wrote a lot of reviews on Goodreads and I wanted to be able to share my love (or dislike) of a book with a wider audience who might not be on Goodreads. I had always liked the idea but thought it was too hard but when I realised it was rather simple I dove right in.

2. If you could ask an author anything what would it be (and to whom)?
I would possibly ask why they started to write, not necessarily why they wrote what they did, but what started their journey. Based on that I could probably ask any author I love really but we’ll say John Marsden.

3. Do you get attached to fictional characters? And if so, what draws you to them?
Absolutely, I even get disappointed in them when they start doing things I don’t think they should be doing. Sometimes they appeal to me simply because of a quirk they have, but sometimes it is also a philosophy they carry around that makes you admire them to begin with, then you become attached to everything about them.

 4. Apart from good writing, what qualities make up a great read/book to you?
Not being afraid to show what needs to be shown or told; also giving the reader credit to understand for themselves meaning or intention, or even simple to connect the dots plot wise.

 5. What book do you wish you had written yourself?
I wish I had written a lot, but what Jasper Fforde has done with The Eyre Affair (and the Thursday Next series) I think is spectacular and would claim credit for in a heartbeat.

 6. If you could have any job in the world, what would it be? (It can be as outlandish as you dare)
Zookeeper, specifically for the lions, that was I could just stand there and stare at them all day in bliss, occasionally doing work when I am being watched.

 7. If you could live any fictional character’s life for a day who would it be and where would you go?
Lyra Silvertongue’s from Northern Lights. I wanted a daemon so badly when I was growing up, it sounded amazing.

 8. If you could go anywhere in the world where would you choose?
I would go to Scotland.

 9. Do you prefer short stories or novels?
I don’t really have a preference, a good short story can do a lot to you, but I suppose you get longer satisfaction from a novel if you want deep story or full characters.

 10. Do you read more ebooks or paperbacks? Do you have a preference?
I read more paperbacks, but I have read a couple, actually I think only two, as ebooks. I would say I have a paperback preference if given the choice but if necessary I am perfectly fine with an ebook.

To carry on the tradition! (I know it isn’t 10 I’m sorry!)
