Today is the birthday of author Angela Carter and in honour of that I am looking at her collection of short stories in The Bloody Chamber. It is an excellent collection, if you are a fan of fairytales, or love seeing fairytales reinvented in amazing ways, then I suggest you read these stories.

Born in England in 1940, Angela Carter wrote many books in her lifetime, sadly she only lived until she was 51 years old. However in that time she managed to write a large collection of stories, poems, radio plays, as well as children’s books and much more. What I found interesting was that before she died, Carter was planning on writing a sequel to Jane Eyre. I think this would have been fantastic, it was supposedly going to be told from the perspective of Jane’s step-daughter Adele, that would have been interesting to see.

Carter was listed on The Times “50 greatest British writers since 1945” in 2008, at tenth place it is a position I agree with immensely, what I didn’t agree was that Terry Pratchett didn’t make that list at all, but we can only just forgive that because of the others that were included.

The Bloody Chamber & Other Stories is an anthology of short fiction by Angela Carter. All of the stories share a common theme of being closely based upon fairy tales or folk tales. However, she’s stated: “My intention was not to do ‘versions’ or, as the American edition of the book said, horribly, ‘adult’ fairy tales, but to extract the latent content from the traditional stories.”

The Bloody Chamber was published in 1979 and is a collection of short stories that are dark, sinister, and marvellous all at once. What Carter manages to do is turn the fairytales we know on their head, and she makes us look at them in a new light completely. The book comprises of ten stories, The Bloody Chamber; The Courtship of Mr Lyon; The Tiger’s Bride; Puss-in-Boots; The Erl-King; The Snow Child; The Lady of the House of Love; The Werewolf; The Company of Wolves; and Wolf-Alice.

Carter looks at stories such as Beauty and the Beast, Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, Bluebeard, as well as folklore tales, and what she has come up with are so unique, and so amazing that it is very hard to think of them as their original stories sometimes. There is definitely so much that that can be read into these stories, I know there are hundreds of references alluded to and mentioned in short story The Bloody Chamber that have scholars running about trying to interpret, but what references that are there does not distract from the story, nor does typically knowing the originals, they are easily enjoyed without understanding the origins, but for well known stories such as Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, or Puss in Boots, then it creates an eye opener for readers.

What is wonderful about these stories is that it isn’t just another version of the traditional telling, Carter brings so much more into these stories, she alternates points of view, and she brings in strong powerful women with highly emotional and intellectual insights that create meaning and force in these tales.

Her story The Werewolf, based on Little Red Riding Hood, had a huge impact on me. Very much like the novels of John Marsden’s when I realised stories did not have to be simple and straight forward; what Carter showed me in this story was that fairytales can be complex and may not be as they appear. From this simple story I suddenly looked at other fairytales like Hansel and Gretel in a whole new light, I realised and embraced that even the simplest stories of the Gingerbread man or Snow White could be recreated in an entirely new light, changing everything it was meant to be.

I already had a huge love for fairytales, and when I read Carter’s reinventions it opened my eyes to a world of interpretation, mixing and transforming these classics into something that is powerful and magical, while still showing signs of the history of the fairytales I knew. Personal favourites would have to be Company of Wolves, Wolf-Alice, and The Werewolf, definitely interesting since they are all variations on Little Red Riding Hood, a story that I didn’t like as a child, and yet has become one that I have enjoyed most in adapted form.

 Company of Wolves was turned into a very good film in 1984. It is classified as a British Gothic fantasy-horror film and director Neil Jordon co-wrote the screenplay with Carter. It is another variation on the Little Red Riding Hood story and is set in the modern day. It is a little gruesome at times, but it is an excellent film all the same.

There is something for everyone with Carter’s works and her writing makes you reconsider writing and storytelling, especially for fairytales. They hark back to the originals where it was more truthful and realistic, certainly told as cautionary tales, but also as a representation of powerful women. To steal from Wikipedia a wonderful synopsis: “By contrasting the barren and horrific atmosphere found typically within the Gothic to the strong heroines of her story, Carter is able to create sexually liberated female characters that are set against the more traditional backdrop of the fairy tale.”

A truly wonderful set of stories that stay with you long after you finish them, I wish Angela Carter a happy birthday and I want to thank her for the influence she has had on my own writing, as well as my ideas about fairytales and the power and possibilities they possess, no matter what the form.

The idea that the gateway to hell is in a forest in New Jersey is a pretty enticing way to base a novel. As soon as we begin the story we are thrown into the world of a mysterious creature and what it is capable of doing, then as we move on to a different world entirely we know it is just a matter of time before two worlds collide and creates the trouble this causes for those involved.

Call of the Jersey Devil tells the story of five “mall rat” teenagers who travel to the New Jersey Pine Barrens to see Gothic singer Villy Bats, however things are not all they seem, and when all hell starts to break loose (I love that this has become a literal phrase), they are soon faced with an entire underworld itching to get out through the gates of hell. Enlisting the help of a witch the teens and Villy must fight to stop the gates from opening further, and flooding the world with demonic incarnations, one of which is the legendary figure known as the Jersey Devil.
Being a fan of Voltaire’s work and having watched him provide updates on the book’s development for months, I sat here patiently waiting to finally get a chance to read it. After given the chance to read an Advanced Reader Copy I jumped at the opportunity. Having now finished it, almost unable to put down unless I had to, I am so glad it lived up to my expectations and went beyond what I ever thought it would be. It seems wrong to seemingly praise Voltaire for somehow writing such an excellent book as a first time novelist, almost as if it were unexpected, but not only do I know many first time authors who write excellent books, but Voltaire has a long successful creative and storytelling history behind him, this time it has simply descended on the page rather than in a graphic novel, a song, or a film.

But while Voltaire is a good storyteller, there is no doubt he is also a good writer. There are sentences and phrases in this book that are wonderful, all nestled in amongst the joking and the teenagers, and the whole ordeal of this demonic spawn and an opening underworld. The descriptions are excellent as well, whether they are of people, demons, or the environment around them. The way Voltaire writes you can immediately conjure up images and feeling of people and events; especially the scenes in the woods, not to mention the ominous feeling of uncertain darkness and the monsters it hides.

Along with descriptions there are also some very insightful moments in this book, as well as evoking one-liners and entire ideas expressed eloquently, often needing very few words attached to them. Voltaire has a way with words that is very beautiful; perhaps this is the long established creator within, or simply an observant and insightful personality coming through on the page, or perhaps both. Whatever the case it is certainly a talent to create a compelling and engaging story that can make you think, feel, as well as be fearful and grossed out all at the same time.

What I enjoyed about Call of the Jersey Devil is the fact that is has so much in it, but it never seems crowded, nor does it jump and feel fractured as you read. The opening of the book and early chapters are definitely designed to set up our characters and lead us into the oncoming events that connect you to the title. This beginning I feel is needed because it impacts on the remainder of the story, as well as how you perceive and assess the characters themselves.

Whether this was my own over thinking or not, but I felt that we were introduced to these “mall rats” as we were to give us a chance at creating our own preconceptions and assessments on them as people. Certainly other characters and they themselves fed this opinion, but in doing so it gives a lot of power to the rest of the novel which then begins to break down these initial judgements.

Voltaire changes point of view throughout and we are able to see the unfolding events through almost every characters eyes and thoughts. In doing so we are also given the opportunity to gain an insight into their history and back story to show you who they are and how they came to be that way. Aside from providing histories, it is interesting to see how each character treats the circumstances they are in, some relish it, some fear it, while others hate it.

Villy was an interesting character, if not complex. I enjoyed his character more I think because of his complexities and imperfections, that is what makes him real. The same can  be said for the others; these characters, especially the mall rats: Stuey, Prudence, Ari, AJ, and Aleister, are portrayed as real people, all with the quirky, obnoxious, selfish, vain and adoring aspects that is within anybody. Voltaire is very good at showing the readers that there is certainly a ‘group persona’ that is separate from who someone really is. This is why having alternating points of view and providing back stories helps you understand these characters a lot more, you see them as who they are, not only as the face they put on for the public.

You do get to see these characters behave separately from their group persona. This helps you not to instantly dismiss them as selfish teenagers who are loud and obnoxious and rude to one another, they all have a reason and Voltaire shows us, giving us a little more understanding, and yet almost not enough to excuse everything that they do, more to show how it has shaped who they became. This doesn’t always change any opinions or add much sympathy, but we are given an explanation.

Towards the middle of the book the story settles in nicely and it is now that everything begins to unravel, and it isn’t long before it is strange, and is possibly grotesque to some, but it is brilliant. There is a strange absurdness about it that is compelling and wonderful. You can certainly see where the influences came from of the genre films, and yet it does not read as cliché and over done either. The additional elements Voltaire added makes it humorous, and yet still terrifying and clever at the same time.

While it is grotesque in some parts, you cannot ignore the humour, this almost balances out the unpleasant details and descriptions Voltaire gives to the demonic faction within the woods. There is snarky sarcasm, and amusing moments that sit either side of the ‘horror’ aspect, but there is also some that cuts through the horror and breaks up the unpleasant scenes.

There were events in this book that took me by surprise in some cases, and not in others, but all were engaging, and in some cases saddening, all contrasting within a single chapter at times. There are also some very heartfelt moments in this book which was certainly a surprise, but certainly well placed and executed. There is the correct balance between the parody, the horror, and the realism to make it work very well. It isn’t even an equal balance, that is not what the story requires, but where these moments happen and by whom are perfectly placed to suit the character and the narrative.

I loved the ending of this book; I thought it was perfect for where the story began and how it played out. I think the way Voltaire established his characters and how we get to know them, not to mention the situations they get themselves in, helped explain and make the ending scenes and epilogue ideal. What was wonderful was the fact that Voltaire keeps you engaged and laughing throughout and until the end, which is very hard when you have demons, teenagers, witches, and the paranormal to contend with. There is also amazing and detailed artworks that accompany this story, certainly not required as the descriptions do them justice, but by having a startling sketch to illustrate a scene create an impressive impact on the mind when you continue reading. And entire idea can be captured in one of those drawings, there are just the right amount to suit just the right needs.

In his interview Voltaire said he was a storyteller, and he is; but there is also novel here. Within this story there are glimpses and hints of beauty and art, hiding amongst this “storytelling”. So while when you hear storyteller you may think casual conversational tone, there will be a lot that will surprise you with this book. For someone who does not read, Voltaire can write. But we already knew that. You only need to look at his songs or his films, or his other works to know he is talented, and know that reading does not always equate to talent or skill in writing.

Star Wars Day

We will ignore the fact that this site is ruining the greatest day ever by having a hissy fit about comments and not letting people through, yes you blog.com! And instead we will enjoy Star Wars Day happily and merrily and remind people they can still comment on Facebook.

I recently undertook a Star Wars marathon which was glorious. I insist that every one should do this, and I also insist that you watch them originals and then prequels. You will do yourself no good watching them 1-6 because it ruins practically everything in 4-6 by watching 1-3 first.

I will say I hold A New Hope (IV) as a high favourite because it was the one I saw first, however I rather enjoyed Revenge of the Sith (III), but that one pretty much confirms the idea you have to watch them old then new. And then when you think about it they were all amazing, yes even the other prequels, though there are some serious cringe-worthy moments in them. I was 11 when I saw the first prequel, and being young and naive I really liked it. Now I can see the flaws, but there are still good moments, and they are good films, as odd sequel prequels. It is much better to see where it began after the fact than try and watch it chronologically.

There are many Star Wars books, a lot of them extending storylines after films and looking at where and how characters ended up. There are a lot. They have been going awhile, list is here. There are a range of different books and facts and artworks and a whole collection of Star Wars content that goes beyond the films. Even the television shows and the merchandise probably is on par with what the fans have created.

As favourite characters go I have and always will be a Chewy fan, but I have got a soft spot for the Ewoks, I am not entirely sure why but I do. What I find interesting it the fact people go on about the Luke/Leia kiss, and I always thought she only kissed him out of spite to annoy Han. No? Luke may have had his own agenda but I thought it was Leia and Han from the early beginning. I may be wrong, I may have missed something, but that is what I like to think.

So have a happy Star Wars Day, and let us have a proper think about what the next lot of Star Wars films could bring now that Disney is in charge, they did do Avengers, but they also did [insert all their bad attempts at doing serious live action films]. I eagerly wait and see, and surely having Lucas out of range with all his fiddling is better? Maybe? I don’t know, it always makes me think of that Simpsons episode where Bart and Lisa go to Cosmic Wars Ranch and meet “Randell Curtis” to discuss the horrible turn his films have taken. I did always think that ‘The Gathering Shadow’ take on The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones was exaggerated, but when I watched them again I realised it was rather accurate, and that made me slightly sad. But really, I think aside from a few story history fillers, there is little real adventure in the prequels, it is very political and the action only adds to providing back story. But we love them, and they make us happy. So whether you are a original movie only person, or an all in 6 movie, TV shows, lego games, board games, fan fiction, novels, novelty toys, lightsabre wielding person, have a great day, watch some Star Wars, read some Star Wars, or just share some Star Wars with the uninitiated!

Aurelio Voltaire Interview

I have been excited about this for weeks. I was given the opportunity by the amazing Spence City Publishing to interview Aurelio Voltaire about his new book Call of the Jersey Devil and I am finally able to share it with you all! Now as we know from my previous post, I am a huge Voltaire fan so I was ecstatic and freaking out all at once. Now, I don’t want my dreams crushed by the revelation that it was via email, and I probably wasn’t the only one, but I will not have these dreams squandered. So, as we get the air of faux professionalism about us we can stop reducing our minor credibility we inflict upon ourself and get on with it.

Call of the Jersey Devil is Voltaire’s first fiction novel, one which is classified as a horror/comedy style, and is filled with wonderful artwork and an entertaining story about a Goth singer, five teenagers, and a legendary figure from Jersey known as the Jersey Devil. This is the story of these five suburban mall rats and the washed up Goth singer who find themselves stranded in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey where they discover two horrifying truths: The Jersey Devil, hellspawn of folklore, is in fact real; and New Jersey is the gateway to Hell.

As a homage to 80s horror and genre films I think what I liked most was this book has been described as having “Frankensteined together elements of Evil Dead, The Breakfast Club, Poltergeist, and This is Spinal Tap”, and this creation has created something that is funny, as well as terrifying at the same time. Fans and followers of Voltaire have been kept updated on the novel’s development via Facebook, Twitter, as well as Voltaire’s Nooseletters and website, and those lucky enough to attend shows have already been privy to an author reading of a chapter or so. I myself have been awaiting its release and I am over the moon to be able to participate in its promotion.

Once again I thank Spence City for giving me this opportunity, and thank you Voltaire for taking the time out of your hectic schedule to reply to my questions.

Did any of your music or film history influence the way you wrote Call of the Jersey Devil?

V: Absolutely! For starters, the book is populated by a handful of Gothic mall rats and so there are many songs from the genre that are referenced. They have conversations about The Cure, Black Sabbath, Danny Elfman.. there’s lots of stuff like that. And in general, the book is really an homage to the films I grew up loving in the 80s. Films like Evil Dead, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Breakfast Club. I think that someone who is familiar with those references is going to get a big kick out of this book.

A few years ago your advice to aspiring authors was “First you have to create the art; once the art is created the rest will come.” Is this still the case?

V: Yes, it still holds true. LOL! Unfortunately, having written a couple of books, I get a non stop stream of aspiring writers asking me how to get published (and for the record, I still don’t really know the answer). The problem is that the great majority of these people have NOT YET WRITTEN A BOOK! It’s kind of crazy. It’s like calling NASA and asking them to tell you in full detail the correct way to exit a lunar lander. Why should they waste their time? First you have to put in the work and become an astronaut. Then you have to go out in space a few times and THEN.. maybe someday, you get to land on the moon. But many people are not really interested in putting in the work. Sometimes they are not even interested in the art form itself.. They have no passion for writing or storytelling, they just like the idea of being a published author. They romanticize the idea of it. Honestly, I can’t even wrap my brain around it. For me, the most basic part is that I like to create, I live to create. If I was homeless and had no occupation, I would still be creating. I know this to be true because I’ve been homeless and I’ve been unemployed and I spent my days creating! LOL! The concept of being successful at it, making a living from it, that needs to come AFTER the deep seated desire to… create. Of course this is just my personal opinion. There are many people who are very successful who see it as a formula. They consider what’s popular. They write something that fits comfortably into the current trend and they find out how to get it published quickly. Those people suck.

So many other authors tell aspiring writers that they must read in order to write. You’ve mentioned before that you are not a reader of books, and yet reading Slaughterhouse-Five made you want to begin writing yourself. Did you find it more of a challenge because you were not a reader, or do you think a good story can be written regardless if you work hard enough on it and have a great story to tell?

V: I think the easy to answer to that is that there is a difference between writing and storytelling. I’m a storyteller. I have always been one. I’ve told stories all of my life. In my songs, in my comic books, in my films. Being a writer is different. There are rules to being a writer that you must follow, trends in writing you should know and perhaps emulate. Taking my storytelling and turning it into what people think of as writing today was a challenge, but not a huge one. I had an amazing editor, Trisha Wooldridge who was stern but kind and she guided me. I learned a lot from her and her input made for a much better book.

The reason Slaughterhouse Five inspired me to write, in short, was because when I read it, I instantly thought.. hey, this is how I speak! I imagined that if I already speak in a similar tone, that I could write a book, too. I was not aware at the time that you have to be Kurt Vonnegut to get away with it! LOL!

I think the end result on Call of the Jersey Devil is a book that’s written in a way that won’t startle anyone but still has enough of my irreverence coming through to perhaps have a unique slant. That’s my hope, anyway.

You have another book in the works with Mezco Toys, The Legend of Candy Claws, what is it about legendary figures that appeals to you, if there is any appeal at all?

V: Well, I guess you’ll be the first to know, but that deal fell through. Apparently Mezco bit off more than they could chew this year and sadly, my book was one of the casualties of them scaling back. It simply means that I’m back to where I was in the start, which was having what I think is a really great story on my hands and needing to figure out how to bring it to the world. It’s nothing that doesn’t happen all of the time in the world of business and nothing I’m not accustomed to.

As to the second part of your question… what’s not to love about legends? There is an inherent epic quality to legendary creatures and hey, when you can invent one of your own… it’s even better! I think Candy Claws or ‘Hargoyle the Christmas bat’ as he’s known to his friends, will see the light of day one way or the other and I think there will be people in the world who will fall in love with this giant, black furry bat the way I have.

 Despite your music typically being categorised as “dark cabaret”, you recently said your music does not have any particular style, is this true of your writing as well or is there a general dark humour similar to that of your albums?

V: My writing, like my music is, I like to think, multi-faceted. There is definitely going to be dark humor, there is going to be pathos, there are going to be moments of true terror, moments of levity, moments of tenderness. I don’t find any of this odd. This is how life is and for one to ONLY write comedy or only write tragedy, to me, seems alien and strange. For me, realism and truth is found in a place where comedy and tragedy live side by side at all times.

 You are very interactive with your fans on YouTube, as well as on Facebook and Twitter, do you look for inspiration from them in your work or is any inspiration you get from them purely serendipitous?

V: My fans play a big part in what I do. I mean, I talk to them pretty much all day long on the internet and all night long at the shows. They tell me what they like, what they don’t like. As I converse with them I learn about the things that move them, the things that bother them, etc… Now, consciously, when it comes time to make art, whether it be music, writing, films, etc… I am in my own head. My philosophy is that if I’m true to myself, if I write something that makes ME laugh or makes ME cry, there will be people in the world who will get the same thing out of the work. I really believe that. I think nothing resonates more strongly with people than honesty. But I’d be a fool to believe that all of the things I’ve experienced with my fans don’t trickle in. No man is an island. We are, in the end, subconsciously if nothing else, a product of our experiences, our interactions and conversations with the world around us.

You mentioned recently that a song on your upcoming album refers to one mentioned in Call of the Jersey Devil, did you plan the entire album based on the story, or was the new album written into the narrative?  

V: It’s a symbiotic relationship. When I set out to write a book about a washed up Goth singer, I drew from some of the early songs I wrote, ironically, songs from a decade before I started recording music. Primarily, because back then I actually wrote what one might call “Goth” music (as opposed to the dark folk/cabaret sound I eventually became known for). However, writing a book is a very time consuming process and in the months it took to write Call of the Jersey Devil, I spent a lot of time thinking about those early songs. Somewhere along the line, I got really excited about the idea of making the only album Raised By Bats (the band in the book) had ever released. And so… that’s the album I’m making. And I have to tell you, giving myself a reason to record and release the songs I wrote when I was seventeen years old has been one of the most surprisingly beautiful turn of events in my life. I have truly revisited all of the pain and hope from that time in my life. It’s been like finding an old scrap book from high school. It’s been… an experience.

What made you move to novels from graphic novels and nonfiction? Was it a natural progression?

V: Well, while it wasn’t really a conscious decision, I do have to point out that my experience is that no one cares about comic books! My graphic novels rank right up there with the most labor intensive and ironically thankless endeavors in my life. I worked for no less than eight hours a day (above and beyond what I was doing to pay the rent) to draw the pages of my Chi-chian then Oh My Goth! then Deady graphic novels. As far as I could tell, based on sales, people really didn’t care that much for them. However, I could never keep the toys in stock! Eventually, I stopped making comic books and only made the toys of the characters. To this day, I can’t keep the toys in stock. They are always the first things to sell out. I honestly don’t even want to think about it because I will get very misanthropic if I let myself believe that people don’t appreciate the thousands of hours that go into telling the stories and drawing the pages, but go bananas to get their hands on a plush toy that took ten minutes to design. LOL! Okay, yeah, let’s just stop talking about it.

You are a dedicated fan of Star Trek and Star Wars, do you read or secretly write any fan fiction about either franchise?

V: Nope. An ex-girlfriend bought me a Deep Space Nine novel as a joke from the gift shop of a hotel at which we stayed when we were on some tropical island many years ago. And when a monsoon hit, I did actually read it. It was… pretty bad. LOL! But no, I can’t see myself investing time in writing fan fiction. I have far too many ideas of my own and if I live to be a hundred, I will not have anywhere near enough time to bring them all to light.

How is your other story The Nothing going?

V: Terribly! LOL! I’m presently writing an album, touring, promoting Call of the Jersey Devil, preparing five different toy releases for this year, wrapping up my children’s book, writing a script for a feature film and doing another dozen things I can’t even think of right now. So, sadly The Nothing has really fallen behind. I don’t even have a full chapter written yet. But like everything else in the pipeline, I will eventually get to it and I will eventually finish it.
It’s just a matter of… time.

A short detective story

I found this as part of an A-Z reading challenge last year after having little luck tracking down my previous choice for X. I had never read a detective novel at the time and I think this was a very good way to introduce myself into the age old genre. I had of course heard of all the wonderful detective novels and authors but never felt drawn to read them, aside from the feeling that I should read Sherlock Holmes one day. After I finished this short story I did begin looking for other stories of this genre and I am slowly opening myself to this wonderful genre.

X Y Z is a short story written by Anna Katharine Green, and tells the story of a detective who arrives in town in an attempt to investigate counterfeiters possibly connected to a series of mysterious letters addressed only to X Y Z. Set in a small town in Massachusetts, the story takes place in the later parts of the 1800s and begins with one investigation but soon moves into another of mystery and drama. In the course of the investigation an anomaly occurs, tugging at our unnamed detective’s curiosity. This curiosity leads his inquiries and attention to a prominent family in town, who as far as the rumours and secretive nature demonstrate, have mysteries and secrets of their own.

What amused me was that as I started to read I found myself reading it in the voice of the old black and white detective films, including that undeniable accent which made it all the more interesting in my mind. The story is engaging, and despite being short there is a decent well rounded story and character establishment. We are given the details we need for the plot, there is no information in this story that is irrelevant. I am not sure whether this includes the name of our detective, it hardly seems irrelevant, he interacts with enough people in the town, yet Green has omitted his name. Whether to add mystery or to keep her readers in suspense, I don’t know. If you wanted to look deeply into this you could play the idea of the mystery stranger who arrives in town, changes the town and creates a fuss, then leaves again. But isn’t being a stranger enough to do that? Whatever the reason I didn’t find it a bother, you almost forget after a while, there is only one detective to keep track of after all.

The characters in this story are well thought out and planned, and the story unfolded in a way where there were hints and clues and when it all came to a head it was as I imagined it to be. There are just as many gasps and surprises and twists even in a story of this size and there is no doubt it is of the detective genre. The secrets and mysteries are revealed by the end, perhaps not in the way you would imagine, but there are no extravagant twists and turns that make the story more mind bending and complex than it needs to be. Being written in the era it was, it is a basic detective novel where you are given clues and answers with the twists and revelations as you go. It was certainly a good read that certainly sparked my interest in this genre.
