Book Launch: Returning by Francesca Suters

20140512_183258Tonight I attended the book launch for author Francesca Suters‘ debut novel Returning hosted by Toronto Library. Returning is the story of twenty nine year old Rita who one days wakes up to find herself as her sixteen year old self again, but with all the life experience of being an adult. A story filled with what ifs and chances to undo past regret, and a a story that explores the mindset of being a teenager and an adult, and the struggles that come with both. As someone lovely stated this evening, it is a book that makes you wonder about second chances.

I had been looking forward to this night for awhile and I was eager to get a copy of Francesca’s book. Overall it was a very fun evening to attend, and there were quite a few people there who had all come to help celebrate Francesca’s book. Before the event had even “officially” started Francesca was already talking with people and signing books for them that they had purchased, and as a bonus people also got gorgeous bookmarks as well.

There was a wonderful atmosphere all evening as everyone chattered away, met new people, chatted to friends, and introduced friends to new people. We were even provided with a wonderful table filled with a range of nibblies for people to enjoy, supplied by friends and supporters who it seems had all brought a plate. I may have indulged in a lamington finger or three over the evening because…well it’s a lamington. It’s practically illegal to not have one when you see one, even if it is only a lamington finger.20140512_173104

20140512_182630In addition, a competition was being run alongside the launch with the winner receiving a hamper. The question to answer was along the lines of “What would you say to your sixteen year old self?” The answers were then places on the tree with the winner being chosen later in the evening. When I first read it I thought it was a rather dangerous question, it could go anywhere, but as the evening went on and you read what people had written down they were rather poetic. Even if you had no idea who had written what, somehow without knowing the face or the name or the history of the person who had written the message, you were given a brief insight into their life and who they were or who they had become. It was also a great chance for reflection; I know I had to think for about five minutes before I had something to write down. And while I initially thought it was a dangerous question, in that simple question you actually have to reflect and face either who you were when you were 16, or who you are presently. It’s quite profound really.

Away from the self reflection and identity crisis, when the launch officially began, we were given an introduction to the author of the night and shared a few thoughts about her book. When Francesca took to the podium it was really interesting to hear about the journey she had taken in writing and releasing Returning. I always love hearing about how authors became who they are, or how they wrote that book. I enjoy back story behind the book I have in my hand, and I like knowing more about new and favourite authors and more often than not gain inspiration for my own work and gain a validation that whatever it is I am doing in terms of my own writing.

20140512_175737Francesca explained that this had been a year of firsts for her, her first time finishing a manuscript (though not the first attempt at one), the first peer reviewed book (courtesy of the Old Ducks Book Club), the first time self publishing, and her first book launch. Something I found extremely interesting was that Francesca went straight to self publishing. Once she had finished the book she did not want to wait for someone to judge it and decide whether it was good or not, she just wanted to hold the book in her hands. I don’t think I had heard of this happening before, the self published authors I know tried the traditional route first, so it was inspiring to hear Francesca had the confidence to just jump straight in and do it herself.

After hearing about her desire to write a novel (on her bucket list before she knew what a bucket list was), and how, while she is not Rita, her choices had changed a lot since starting a family which started her thinking about second chances, we were given further insights into the process of self publishing.

Once the launch had officially concluded, the mingling began once more as people enjoyed the rest of the launch (and the rest of the nibblies) while Francesca signed more books before joining the crowd and chatted with attendees.

Overall a successful launch if I say so myself. I look forward to reading and reviewing Francesca’s book very soon and I wish her all the best with its success. A sequel was already announced this evening so there is more to look forward to in the future from Francesca and perhaps even Rita. I will say though, that while it was an excellent launch, sadly I did not win the hamper. Maybe next time.

Star Wars Day

Star WarsToday is once again International Star Wars Day. Last year I made a wonderful post about it and my thoughts on the movies, but it was coupled by the fact I was having seriously annoying issues with the last host of this blog, Blog.com, and so there was a slight air of tension about the day and in the post.

The revival of the series, Star Wars VII, is coming along nicely, the first group of actors that will star in it have been announced, the old favourites of Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford all playing (presumably) their original parts. There was some immediate controversy however about the fact only one additional woman has been added to the story, something which prompted theories of it being another annoying love triangle plot with the new generation. But there are also theories there are further cast announcements to be made and with no filming having started or clear indication of plot, speculating isn’t doing anyone any good.

I think I am looking forward to the movie if not just to see what they’re going to do with this big time difference. Having rewatched the series last year I came to the realisation that I don’t mind the prequels, being older than I was when I first saw them I can see the flaws, but it wasn’t that badly done that I’m giving up on them. I do reserve my right to avoid any TV show about it because computer generated Stars Wars about the clone wars isn’t my thing, so I am a movie fan and quite happy to be one. Plus possibly a lot of the merchandise which I eye off and add to wishlists I know will rarely be granted.

Only a few hours into this morning I already saw a lot of annoyance and negativity towards Star Wars Day on twitter. Everything from people saying that people who go around saying “May the fourth be with you” will end up alone, or nit-picky people saying it is “the fourth of May, not May the fourth”, even just people saying it is stupid and don’t want any one near them to say it. I don’t understand the dislike, it isn’t technically official, nobody has asked you to participate in the day and commenting on your distaste for what is really a meaningless unofficial day seems to me a lot more effort than you believe it to be worth. Don’t attack people who want to enjoy a fun day and share their love a film series (and subsequent TV, books, comics, cartoon etc etc and whatever else Star Wars format I’ve forgotten), it’s rude, disrespectful and just unnecessary. This goes for other non Star Wars Days as well, don’t belittle someone’s passion just because it isn’t yours, but that rant is not for today.

What I like about this day is not just the play on words, because that is always an awesome added bonus, and not just that I can have more of an excuse to look up images of stormtroopers being parents/enjoying life (seriously Google that because it is adorable!),  but the fact that it isn’t a small “holiday”, I’ve seen booksellers and authors, newspapers and websites all promoting the day, they may not be fans themselves but take part and celebrate it all the same. As I say, I don’t claim to be the biggest Star Wars fan, but at 12:04am when I realised what day it was, I did spent two and a half hours, hours when I should have been in bed (or at least working on my assignments), putting Toby in Jedi robes so that definitely puts me on the scale somewhere.

I may have to go listen to some Aurelio Voltaire Star Wars themed songs now to celebrate since writing this has gotten them in my head. I hope you all have a wonderful Star Wars Day and may the force be with you all.

Penguin Random House National Book Bloggers Forum 2014

RHA_Bloggers2014_Badge1

As I am currently running on very little sleep as I work on three uni assignments at once and can’t really think straight right now, I was very excited to receive an email that told me I had been selected to attend the inaugural Penguin Random House National Book Bloggers Forum.

The forum, which has been set up to foster a closer working relationship with the book blogging community, will be held May 20th at the Random House Australia office in Sydney. There will be guest speakers, insights from publishers, as well as a chance for bloggers to get information on promotion and ask questions and have discussions.

Brett Osmond, Marketing and Publicity Director at Random House Australia, says “In this constantly-evolving media landscape, readers now get their information from many different platforms and as part of this we recognise that blogs are an increasingly important source of information and entertainment.” He is hoping this conference will be a collaboration between the book blogging community and Penguin Random House, a chance to share news about authors and books as well as gain feedback from the bloggers on what they would like to see.

Bloggers unable to attend can still join in through Twitter using the #NBBF14 tag or by following @RandomHouseAU. You can read more about the event, sign up to attend if you’ve got a book blog (places are limited), or check out a sneak peek of the program on Random House’s website.

The conference coincides with the Sydney Writers Festival and runs all day.

Excerpt

… Nine lowered her head. She wasn’t crying anymore. Her lips were parted, her eyebrows furrowed. Shock. She was in shock. Kade hated that he had to give someone as marvelous as Nine away to people who would only brutalize her perfect body, but it was the way of the new world. He had to push his mother’s advice to the side and do what society taught him to do—to rule.

“I’m going to teach you how to seduce a man. I’m going to teach you how to tease and please a man… and you’re going to use that knowledge to help me.”

His words caused his heart to race and it rattled his ribcage as he fought hard to suppress his own excitement. Kade tugged at his belt and she took a defensive step back. Her eyes went round as fear spread across her face and froze her features.

“Get on your knees, Nine. This is lesson one.”

“You’re going to skip everything and go straight to that?” She spat ‘that’ like it was poison on her tongue.

He smiled. Brave, but stupid. Now you want me to skip everything? Now you want me to seduce you, to kiss you and touch you?” He narrowed his eyes. “You didn’t want that a moment ago. Have you heard the term don’t push your luck?” He paused and she refused to look at him. “Drop to your knees.”

“And if I don’t?” She uttered, pinching the tip of one of her index fingers, nervously. “What will happen?”

Perhaps she wasn’t as smart as she looked.

Let’s Talk Books With Amy From Lost In A Good Book

The darling Jess over at The Never Ending Bookshelf has interviewed me for her Let’s Talk Books feature. While you’re there check out the rest of her awesome posts!

Jess's avatarThe Never Ending Bookshelf

Today I’m pretty excited to be hosting this feature with a good friend and fellow blogger of mine, Amy from Lost In A Good Book. Even more so, since Amy was one of the first people I talked about this feature with, so to be able to feature her through it feels a little bit special 🙂

What are you currently reading?

Nocturnes by John Connolly. I am also reading Sherlock Holmes but that’s more intermittently when I am out and about or when I haven’t got another book with me.

What’s the last book you brought?

Let it Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle

Do you prefer to read books in print or electronically?

Print, I will read electronically if that’s the only option, or if it is easier at the time, but I am definitely a print person. I find I don’t know what to…
