On John Marsden

I am not an expert on John Marsden. I don’t even have any authority to speak about his career or his books beyond a reader and fly by observer, there are plenty of articles and commentary coming out that are more knowledgeable than I. But I knew he was a staple in Australian YA and had written some of the most memorable books on the landscape and the most important books in my reading career. When I saw he had died it was a real shock. He was 74 so it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility, but it still felt too soon.

I first picked up Tomorrow series when a friend recommended it in Year 7. The year was 2001 and I was thirteen years old. I loved them. I loved Ellie and how she was not perfect or powerful, but she was capable and smart. She was one in a group of teens who were caught up in a mythical war on Australian soil. From then on I was hooked.

After reading the Tomorrow series I picked up the next Marsden book our library had which was Checkers. It was incredible. Short, unassuming, but packs a punch and hits you in the face right at the end. I had never read anything like it. I didn’t know you could write a book like this. Reading Checkers made me want to do to others what Marsden had done to me. I wanted to write a book that lured the reader in then turned everything on their head at the end. I wanted to blow them away with an ending like that and a story so incredible.

I had always written stories and I’m fairly sure the idea of being a writer was in my brain for a few years at that point, but reading Marsden cemented the idea. I would spend every opportunity recommending Checkers to people and still do despite the fact it probably isn’t as amazing and life changing to others as it was to me.

Winter was another fantastic read, Letters from the Inside, and So Much to Tell You. Marsden loved stories with female voices where they had flaws and were difficult, stubborn, troubled, and in trouble. I don’t think I understood how important that was at the time but now I adored seeing these girls be imperfect. They were loving too, and emotional, and brave. They were human. That’s not to say he doesn’t write boys well either. His retelling of Hamlet was divine, and The Journey brought us the wonderful Argus.

Tomorrow is his powerhouse series of course. Robyn, Ellie, Lee – these characters were instrumental in my love of how regular people can make change. There’s scenes in Tomorrow that are so impactful that I will never forget them. These characters who are so human and so ordinary that are drawn to fight and make a stand. Like Katniss a decade later, these teens looked at the world around them and wanted to stay out of it but were dragged into it, trying to get through it and keeping their humanity intact.

Marsden’s school in Victoria was my dream school. I think I only wanted to go because it was his. I admired him as a writer and thought the brilliant mind I saw in his books would be just as incredible as a teacher. It didn’t matter I was a state away and rapidly aging out of the accepted age for admission.

The absolute highlight was finally getting to meet him in 2013. I did the long drive to Maitland where there was an event and got my sun bleached copies of my Tomorrow books signed. I was a nervous wreck and babbled incoherently and became tongue tied but got through it.

Prior to this meeting my mum got to be at an event with him where she spoke to him about my dreams of being a writer. On a scrap piece of paper he wrote a brief note to me that said To Amy, Take risks!. I framed it and had it sitting on my desk for years where I could stare at it.

Thankfully he published South of Darkness soon after because I got to meet him again in 2014 as I attended a literary lunch through Dymocks. It was super expensive but an amazing experience. I wrote a bit about it at the time and I still remember the wonderful chat around my table (and my first time trying spatchcock), while sitting in the amazingly swanky Shangri-La Hotel. I was feeling incredibly out of place and about fifteen years younger than everyone around me.

The final time I got to see him was when he came to the Sydney Writer’s Festival in 2015 and I got more of my books signed. His sessions about writing and students and education were amazing, and it was clear he had a passion for kids learning and discovering the world around them.

I am not here to say he was the perfect person, or writer. I was old enough to read about and understand the conversation about kids and schools, his views on a range of subjects and people’s views about his opinions. Again, I am not even remotely equipped to talk about that. I know he wasn’t the perfect person, no one is, but the impact he has had on the Aussie YA scene can’t be denied.

I’d like to think if nothing else preservers the Tomorrow series will. It could get readers to expand to his other books and start a chain reaction of then go onto reading authors like him and who like him. I started reading Alice Pung because John Marsden spoke highly of her work, and Alice wrote her own book about Marsden which I loved.

Authors make other authors, and they can change the lives of readers. And even if you were someone who only read his work, I hope his impact will stay with you long after. I know his books changed who I am and I will always be grateful of that.

Something’s Fishy by Jean Gourounas

Join the cumulative cast of polar characters as they gather, chatter, wager guesses, and aggravate Penguin until…they hear something from below the ice!

I love this book; it is simple, clever, has a nice twist, and is delightful and funny.

Penguin is ice fishing and soon becomes the subject of curiosity by those around her. The expression on penguin’s face can be interpreted as annoyance, but even if she is bothered by the interruptions and noise, she doesn’t say much. It’s the onlookers and busybodies who query what’s going on.

It doesn’t take long for the act of fishing becomes a group activity as everyone starts discussing why the fish aren’t biting, with each newcomer adding to the discussion. Even the move from discussing that penguin is fishing to they all are fishing is fantastic. Onlookers are baffled, perplexed, and flummoxed and penguin continues to fish.

The gradual build of onlookers is so enjoyable. From one rabbit, to a walrus, to a whole host of characters, it is made better by penguin’s inaction. This staggered arrival works in companion with the illustrations as well, the layout complimenting the story. The characters move from left to right across the double page, as the new character arrives on the left, they then join the others on the right to observe.

The banter between everyone is great, it’s simple but effective. Short sharp humour that uses repetition but also a smidge absurd. The payoff it brilliant. What you think the penguin is shushing everyone for isn’t the reason you think and the reveal is delightful. Truly a highly enjoyable read.

The Big Cheese by Jory John (#7)

The Big Cheese is the best at everything, and brags about it, too. When the annual Cheese-cathlon comes around, the Big Cheese is prepared to win, as always. But what happens when the quiet new kid, Wedge Wedgeman, comes out on top? Is a slice of humility all the Big Cheese needs to discover that some things are better than being the best? 

Jory John is an instant read for me so of course The Big Cheese was on my list. I hadn’t thought much about what this trait theme was going to be but from the early pages it is evident it’s bragging, or arrogance.

The usual puns are there, this time cheese related. Cheese’s desire to be a big shot meant they worked hard and made a name for themselves but also only doing things they would excel at so they’d always win. I liked the direction the story takes having Cheese learn some humility without it being a takedown of their character. It is a self-taught lesson and one that Cheese discovers through reflection and not from conflict with another character.

There is always so much to love about John’s books and aside from the key messages the story itself is always delightful. I am fascinated by the events of the Cheese-cathalon which include chess, bread buttering, hat making, and sheep herding. It’s a great mix of activities, a little bit of everything to meet everyone’s interests.

I love these food worlds that John creates as it generates a range of questions about the wider world like how can cheese herd sheep but also grow up in what is clearly a human sized kitchen? Despite the questions, the stories are always solid and the message is never forced, developing naturally around the character and their life.

The illustrations are brilliant as usual. The distinct colour pallet and style we’ve seen in other Food Group books is there and the design on these various cheese types is cute and clever. Oswald has brought this cheese world to life with fun characters and cute background features.

Big Cheese learns about humility and being a gracious loser, and understands that winning all the time is actually stressful. Not to mention that not being in the spotlight all the time, and learning to accept defeat, can improve a range of other areas in their life. It’s a great lesson for readers to learn and an added bonus that it’s told in such an adorable and humorous way.

Told in four parts—freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year—this provocative debut reveals the deep cuts of trauma. But it also demonstrates one young woman’s strength as she navigates the disappointment and unbearable pains of adolescence, of first love and first heartbreak, of friendships broken and rebuilt, all while learning to embrace the power of survival she never knew she had hidden within her heart. 

I know this is supposed to be about the emotional impact of trauma and it is. But as much as I tried to appreciate the story it was telling me I couldn’t get into it. It has been compared to Speak, and I think Speak was more impactful, but at the same time there is no one way to experience trauma and react to trauma so it’s also not a fair comparison.

Smith captures characters well with little effort. We understand exactly who Eden’s mother is early on, as well as her father. But living inside Eden’s head we see how trapped she is, and how the want to be asked or seen is like a burning flame no one is paying attention to. Starting at a young age it’s easy to see why she is voiceless, unable to even begin to process what has happened to her. The reveals through the novel are aptly timed and it’s interesting to see the changes made as each new year passes.

With such a sensitive topic it feels wrong somehow to say I got bored reading this. Smith jumps through four years remarkably well, we don’t have to read about every passing day and the jumps are a great way to see how time has changed Eden and those around her. It also helps you avoid having to fill in the blanks around conversations and answer questions that may come up. I had a lot of questions and how some things were feasible, but it is never addressed and time jumps miss a lot so it’s easy not to think about.

One thing I found, and it’s my own fault for continuing to read American YA, they are obsessed with always deeply setting them in a school to the small details. It’s 2024, and while this book was published in 2016, have schools in the States still not grown out of the class system at school of jocks and nerds, the weird kids and the ostracised? Everyone regulated to their own table, never shall they cross, and we will pick on you in the cafeteria for being different? Maybe if you didn’t all eat in one room you could sit away from the tormenting kids. Get some Vitamin D and maybe you’ll calm down. It’s sad in a way if the experiences are still like what the 80s movies always depicted. They wouldn’t keep putting it in books if it was relatable to someone’s life, right? It kicks off key plot points but it’s a tired trope but one I’m starting to think is still incredibly realistic.

What annoyed me most about this book is at the very end, the very final few chapters Smith managed to get me intrigued about the sequel. After putting up with the story, I now have to decide if I want to see what happens next. It isn’t that that we shouldn’t hear stories like Eden’s, far from it. It’s how such an emotional and empowering story managed to feel boring and unengaging. I persevered because you want to see where Eden’s going to end up, how she is going to tackle this through her developmental years and the impact it will have on those around her. I read enough into things myself to add insights. You can implant how she has denied her trauma because she was too young to understand, how she has embraced her rumours, or how she reacts to her trauma without even knowing about it. I only wish I had loved the story more because I think it is important.

The ending gave it the extra half star and I think the half star might get me to read the sequel.

I almost gave up on this book quite early on. It was uninteresting and I wasn’t connecting to these characters or their weird small town celebration. It is one of those small town beauty pageants that is revered to only those in the town limits. Puddin’ had something similar which was also just as strange.

I persisted because I wanted to see the diversity rep, it had appeared on a few lists and I was reading it as a box ticker instead of any real interest in the plot. Thankfully it got better by the halfway point, by then you get to know the characters and could work around the weird stuff and pick out some good moments.

I liked Winnie, and I liked her opinions and her fight against injustice. The weird pageant isn’t as big of a plot point as I thought it would be which made it better. I zoned out on a few bits but it didn’t impact the plot or my understanding.

It is a great book for representation because it covers a lot of different experiences. Winnie is queer, kinda bi, kinda pan, but queer easily covers it. Despite armed with this knowledge I’m still not entirely sure what the deal is with Cara. There is mention of a queer platonic relationship which is fantastic, and she has been pegged as aromatic but it is vague within the story. Again, unspecified is totally fine, there doesn’t need to be neon signs and labels pointing everything out to a reader, but sometimes it is nice having things confirmed. I think the implications are enough to go on though, especially given Kann’s history of writing LGBTQIA rep.

Around the strong opinions and the personal strife the story does get boring again but you power through. There’s generational issues to explore plus there are good, serious, and honest conversations between friends and family members which is a nice change from unrealistically avoiding conversations for plot tension.

Overall it’s slow, it’s a bit boring, but I can see it is important and Winnie is a good character to tell the story. Sorunke is a decent narrator and brought Winnie’s voice to life. I liked that the ending wasn’t a perfect happily ever after. It felt real, and it felt hopeful, which is all you could ask for really.
